Surprising South Africa

Surprising South Africa

There is a plethora of wild and unique flowers in Cape Town South Africa that I hope to portray over the years. The Cape Floristic region is like no other. Living there at various times of my life has allowed me to experience the majesty of this mysterious place that is always regarded as so far away.  The plants can be almost alien-like and surprising in their sturdiness. The plants take on the strength of the place; the winds, the dry hard soil, the strong sun, all to create some one-of-a-kind type plants in the plant kingdom.  The Protea family comes to mind but there is also the Fynbos that grows only is this part of the world.  I look forward to adding to this collection as time ticks.

The Americas; Mexico, Central & South

The Americas; Mexico, Central & South

Taking off in January 2022 from Bali, I ended up in Mexico and decided to travel south for the year exploring parts of Mexico, Central and South America.  These are some of the fruits and flowers I came across, or will come across as I am still traveling as of July 2022.  I spent one month in both Guatemala & Costa Rica and soon will be in Peru.

Maui Temptations

Maui Temptations

Living in Maui during the end of 2020 & into 2021, I created 3 large paintings that represent, to me, the main tropical wonder's of the islands in regards to fruit's and flora. No doubt there are many others, especially medicinally speaking, but for now I am focused on the bright bold and brilliant colours of the Tropics.

In India

In India

I was unexpectedly detained in India during the 2020 lockdown crisis and managed to get a hold of some professional watercolour paper and organize a few random painting spaces.  Focusing on a few botanical expressions of various fruits and flowers I also did one of my Floating Lotus series finding that I may do one of those in every country I travel to and settle for a time.  I am based in Rishikesh during this time and managed to get through 3 months in Pondicherry in lockdown but now I have the fresh mountain air and running river to bring some fresh life into my existence while I wait out this world-wide situation and see what comes.  I am rather patiently staying calm amongst the storm and continuing to stay strong and healthy, hoping to fly into the next phase of human mentality on a positive note.

Bali Magic

Bali Magic

This is a series of 7 paintings I did for an exhibition I did October 2019 at Paradisio in Ubud Bali.  I ended up selling a few of the pieces before the show though!  One of the works is of the Vanilla flower & pod because I have happily invested in part of a Bali Vanilla plantation.  Becoming part of the Bali Island with my yoga, painting and now investment has been rewarding.  The expo went well with a nice space to show the work, I look forward to doing more exhibitions in Bali!

S.E. Asian Sensation

S.E. Asian Sensation

This is a collection of works I slowly worked on as I traveled Laos, Malaysia, Bali, Nepal and then carried the vibe over to Hawaii with the Floating Lotus.  I spent 1 yr. 8 m. "on the road" including 6 months in India.  When traveling and living in such diverse countries with their theology and cultures, I pick-up bits of "spiritual" involvement as I express some of my images.  Incorporating real Nepalese prayer flags and having a Buddha in one of the works is new and exciting to play with.  The Shiva rays coming out of the Magnolia is also inspired by my surroundings.

Texas Desert Beauties

Texas Desert Beauties

This is a collection of works I produced Summer of 2015 to Winter 2016 based on the desert Texas beauties that are common in my Texas Life back in the USA.  All but one are of well known strong medicinal value and the Bluebonnet is the State flower.  There were a few articles that came out about these works and I also had 4 solo exhibitions during that 1 1/2 year of USA production time with other pieces that had been waiting to be shown.  Settling into the Texas heat and wide open spaces during that time was very grounding.  I continue to own a home there in the South of Texas and will go back one day.

Thailand Island

Thailand Island

I lived on the island of Phuket in the south of Thailand for 3 months renting a small home and painting every day.  I produced about 7 paintings and also wrote for Expat Life Thailand.  It was good to be in one place for a while after traveling the Thailand countryside for the 1st 3 months of my time there.  The "Going Coconuts" piece was for a magazine so I showed how one can eat and drink the coconut.   With a few of the large close-ups like the Turmeric I began to incorporate some soft pastel into the background.

Tropical Botanical Illustration

Tropical Botanical Illustration

This is a series of 5 paintings in the Classic Botanical Illustrative style.  In these pieces I show the rhizome and the "true" flower along with the inflorescence, often mistakenly taken for the real flower.  The theme is Common Tropical Plants of Hawaii.  I always go to Hawaii when I feel the need to rejuvenate and swim in the sea, feel the warm pacific air and smell the divine flowers that abound all over those islands!

Random Botanical Illustrations

Random Botanical Illustrations

This is a collection of my own style of Botanical Illustration.  Other than the English Oak, they are rather "quirky" pieces, a bit off the classic style normally seen.  It is very delicate work and I enjoy painting one or two of these type of paintings every few washy style paintings.  I enjoy the meditative feel it gives me to take such extreme time and care for one piece of art.

Ibiza Summers

Ibiza Summers

These are from a collection of paintings I did on the island of Ibiza, one of the Balearic Islands off the coast of Spain.  I enjoyed some light "fun in the sun" and painted some of the sights there.  This is just a few that I thought would be fun to share.  They are very basic washy pieces, I was learning how to use soft pastel during this time too in the Old Town of Ibiza with other artists and had a small exhibition one summer there.

Hawaii & San Fransisco Florals

Hawaii & San Fransisco Florals

This is a group of paintings I did back in the 1990's.  I first started playing around with watercolor when I was 21 in Hawaii and continued into my San Francisco years until I was 30.  The selection here are the ones I have chosen to show and they are all framed with frames that I had dyed to match one of the background colors in the painting so they were sold as framed.
