Surrounded; Women in Art

These days, I find myself surrounded by creative women, Women in Art!  They live and breathe it, as I have been doing lately.  Here in Bali, one can immerse oneself deeply into the creative mindset for many people fall in love with this island and must find a way to stay here or they just retire here and keep art alive in their lives!  I've been to quite a few events lately run by women, showing their art or opening their restaurant, a new boutique hotel or showroom.  I feel very inspired daily these days and am pleased to have laid my head here in Ubud, the cultural center of Bali, for now.

Ubud and it's outlying villages is central to many arts, particular crafts being a specialty to each section; woodcarving, silversmithing and painting especially.  Recently, I read that it was the influx of European painters that transformed Ubud into an artist enclave in the 1930's; Walter Spies & Rudolf Bonnet particularly.  The King of Ubud co-founded the Pita Maha Artist Cooperative in 1934 to promote local culture.

Here is a wonderful article I found regarding some places to visit and some light history on Ubud and the Arts, by Sarah Freeman:

CREATIVE SPIRIT: Arts, crafts and the beauty of Bali beyond the beach

For the time being, I will continue to indulge in my own creative outlets of creating some handmade items; small prints on handmade paper & jewelry with my designs in/on pendants and continue working on an online shop MEJSPIRIT using my designs for swim/activewear & lifestyle items.  I will soon return to creating original watercolours on paper but for now it is a nice break and change.  Being experimental and expanding my knowledge, meeting other artist's and being in the creative mode with other like minded women is so rewarding!  Thank you to all my female friends out there that are inspiring me here in the heart of Bali, in Ubud, the magic land of medicine and arts!  As a holistic health educator (ND) & artist, it is the perfect place for me to be!
