I've had a real eye opener here in Ho Chi Minh, never seeing lacquer on board in such an amazing rich and luxurious depth of painting. At the Fine Arts Museum, Ho Chi Minh City, the Son Mai Bac (Northern Lacquer Art) artists wanted to focus on a clear spirit of creation based on traditional materials and techniques. Vietnamese art has found a very unique voice but challenging in the flow of world art and globalization. An assortment of artists from different directions came together to bring light stories as a gift for friend, colleagues and art lovers in Saigon. I was pleased to be able to see this exhibition! There was so many gorgeous works of art I was snapping pictures for 2 hrs and will keep them as keepsakes forever...watercolour on silk, coloured pencils, lacquer on board and eggshells crushed into the work, acrylic and oils, pencil and ink...simply out of this world! It is my first day here, I am grateful to have 5 more.

Ahh, the delectable Orange! We all know it from childhood. It often gets neglected in older years as peeling can be a pain BUT, hear ye hear ye! It is chalk full of vitamins and minerals for our bodies. Even though I live in the tropics, I still buy oranges when I remember how good they are...tangerines too. I have a bit of history with oranges from my Grandmother on my mother's side. She bought two trainloads of oranges for the USA Navy during WWII so they wouldn't get scurvy. Smart lady invested in Diamond Mines but shared the wealth! I can only share the wealth of my knowledge of medicine and oranges are good medicine! Orange Blossoms are full of beauty and invigorating qualities too. Next up on the painting table...L'Orange!!!
The orange originated in Ancient China. As of 1987, orange trees were found to be the most cultivated fruit tree in the world.

For the month of October I'm have a small exhibition on a select choice of Bali medicinal plants at Paradisio Art & Cinema Lounge Cafe here in Ubud Bali; Cacao, Vanilla, Guavasteen, Bamboo & Banana Flower. Although bamboo isn't a fruit or flower, it is one of the main medicinal plants here in Bali, not due to how one eats it but as to the use of it within the ceremonies here everyday. These original watercolours were produced on heavily textured paper and I have used a bit of soft chalk pastel on the top in nooks and crannies and some surface areas to bring out some of the texture of the real plant. If you happen to be in Ubud Bali during this time, please stop in and enjoy the expo!
